Astronomers say they have the first confirmed atmosphere around a rocky, Earth-like planet in another star’s habitable zone. The planet, LHS 1140b, is about 48 light-years away, and for scientists searching for potentially life-friendly worlds, that makes this one of the most exciting targets yet. No, this is not evidence of life. The gas detected so far is helium. But it is strong evidence that a small rocky world in a promising orbit can hold onto an atmosphere, and that alone is a major step. Closer to Earth, India’s private space sector hit a historic mark as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1 into orbit. That makes India only the third country where a private company has independently reached orbit, a sign that the country’s commercial space push is starting to pay off.
Synthetic biology gets a boost

Scientists reported that AI helped them design synthetic CRISPR enzymes that do not exist in nature and may work even better than current natural versions. A preliminary ceasefire is already fraying after an Iranian drone struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, setting off another cycle of retaliation. Even without major casualties, each move is pushing both sides past earlier red lines. That matters well beyond the region because the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive routes for trade and energy supplies. In Europe, Britain is making a different kind of security adjustment, reshaping its military presence in Estonia for a battlefield that looks more like Ukraine: lighter, faster, and far more dependent on drones and rapid targeting.
