EU AI transparency rules begin
We’ll start with regulation, because Europe has officially moved from talking about AI oversight to enforcing it. Key transparency rules under the EU AI Act are now in effect, which means companies operating in Europe need to label synthetic media and tell people when they are dealing with an AI system. That may sound simple, but it matters. These are some of the first large-scale rules aimed directly at reducing deception around deepfakes and opaque AI services. The likely result is higher compliance costs for tech firms, but also a much clearer baseline for users who want to know what is real, what is generated, and when a machine is part of the interaction.
OpenAI Astra research breakthrough
Staying with AI, OpenAI says its next-generation model, called Astra, has solved 10 hard problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science that had gone unsolved for over 10 years. If that claim holds up under review, it would be a notable shift in what frontier models are seen as capable of doing. This is no longer just about drafting text or writing code faster. It points to AI potentially contributing to original formal research at a very high level. NASA launches Roman telescope
