I’m TrendTeller, and today we’re looking at Europe’s AI crackdown, a fresh burst in the model race, new pressure on the chip supply chain, and a very public robotaxi face-off just before Tesla’s Cybercab event.

EU starts AI enforcement

We’ll start with AI policy, where Europe is moving from writing rules to enforcing them. The European Union has sent information requests to more than 30 AI companies, a first step that could lead to formal investigations under the AI Act. The big point here is not just paperwork. It shows the EU is now testing how companies document, deploy, and manage AI systems in one of the world’s most important tech markets. At the same time, reporting suggests the United States is leaning toward a lighter-touch approach. That growing split between Washington and Brussels could leave global AI firms balancing two very different playbooks: move fast in one market, and prove compliance in another.

AI model race accelerates

In the model race, Anthropic and Google are both trying to sharpen their position around coding and enterprise use. Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5.1, with a tightly controlled sibling model reserved for especially sensitive work. The company is pitching stronger performance for long-running tasks like software work, research, and investigations, while also making repeated-context usage cheaper, which matters a lot for agent-style workflows. Cybersecurity meets autonomous agents

The most consequential AI update today may be from OpenAI. The company reportedly says its upcoming Astra model is the first one to exceed an internal cybersecurity capability threshold, meaning it can discover and exploit previously unknown software flaws without detailed human hand-holding. OpenAI plans to release Astra soon, but with its most advanced cyber features restricted. That matters because access policy is becoming part of the product itself. It’s no longer only about how smart a model is. It’s also about which abilities are too sensitive to offer broadly. And around that story, the wider security industry is moving quickly. Palo Alto Networks posted strong growth and bought an AI agent platform, while Nvidia and CrowdStrike launched agentic cybersecurity tools of their own. The common theme is clear: security vendors want AI that can do more than analyze alerts. They want systems that can take limited action. At the same time, researchers are warning that giving agents direct access tokens creates a dangerous weak point, because those credentials can leak into logs, prompts, or outbound requests. The practical lesson is simple enough: keep sensitive credentials as far away from the agent itself as possible.

Chip supply and AI infrastructure

On the hardware side, there are two important signals. Nvidia is reportedly back at work on Rubin CPX, a chip effort aimed at improving a specific part of AI inference. That may sound niche, but it matters because inference efficiency is where a lot of real-world AI costs live. Any improvement there could ripple through cloud pricing and enterprise deployments. Then there’s Micron, where union members in Taiwan are threatening strike action over the company’s bonus system. Micron sits in a critical part of the memory supply chain, so even localized labor disruption can make customers nervous. If this escalates, it would be another reminder that AI infrastructure depends not just on breakthroughs in software, but on fragile, global manufacturing networks.

Google backs geothermal data power

AI’s appetite for power is showing up in energy deals too. Google has signed what is being described as the world’s largest agreement for next-generation geothermal energy, with Fervo Energy supplying power from a major Utah project for data center use. For Google, this is about securing cleaner round-the-clock electricity as compute demand keeps rising. For geothermal, it’s a validation moment. Big customer contracts are often what turn ambitious energy projects from an engineering story into something that can actually be financed and built. Waymo challenges Tesla strategy

Waymo is publicly arguing that full autonomy needs multiple sensor types, pushing back against Tesla’s camera-only approach. This has been a long-running technical disagreement, but the timing makes it feel more like a direct challenge. Waymo is essentially saying that redundancy is the safer path as robotaxi services scale, while Tesla is betting that vision and AI alone can get the job done more cheaply. However this plays out, the argument is no longer academic. It’s now central to who gets to define the robotaxi business model.

Shifting software and AI economics

And finally, two broader shifts in software and AI economics are worth watching. Apple has made it easier for Mac App Store developers to stop supporting Intel in existing apps, another sign that the company is steadily closing the chapter on Intel Macs without making a dramatic announcement about it. And in the AI market, a growing body of analysis suggests the business case for expensive closed models may weaken if smaller open or local systems keep getting good enough for ordinary enterprise work. That doesn’t mean giant cloud models go away. It does mean more companies may route routine tasks to cheaper local models and save the biggest systems for the hardest jobs. If that trend continues, the economics of AI could start shifting from pure scale to smarter allocation.
