I’m TrendTeller, and today we’re looking at how AI is changing software decisions well beyond the code editor, plus a trust issue for researchers, a major Rust milestone at Microsoft, and a few stories where technology shows up in unexpected places.
Shopify returns to native apps
We’ll start with Shopify, which says it is moving major mobile apps away from React Native and back to native Swift and Kotlin. What makes this interesting is the reasoning. Shopify says AI coding agents have changed the economics of building for both iOS and Android, so native development no longer carries the same productivity penalty it did a few years ago. According to the company, AI now helps enough with feature implementation, parity work, testing, and review that the tradeoff looks different. OpenAI trust questions for researchers
In a new development on the OpenAI math story we’ve been following, mathematician Andreas Thom says the company still has not answered the core trust question for researchers. The reason this stands out is that it’s a great example of technology traveling well beyond its original mission. A method built for reading landscapes from above is now helping preserve evidence of human history on the ground.

There’s also an inventive student story from Mexico, where a 16-year-old has developed an acoustic fire extinguisher that uses sound waves instead of water or chemical agents. The appeal is easy to understand: if a system like this can interrupt a flame cleanly, it could be useful in situations where residue or liquid is a problem, especially around electronics. It’s still the sort of idea that would need much deeper testing and validation before anyone should think of it as a mainstream safety tool, but it’s a compelling proof of concept. More broadly, it’s a reminder that meaningful engineering ideas do not always start in a corporate lab. Sometimes they start with a student looking at an everyday problem and trying a very different angle.
In defense of old cables
