Full Episode Transcript: Binance halts trading after hack & Intel plunges on memory costs
One of the oldest names in computing just lost nearly a third of its stock market value in a single day, and the culprit, oddly enough, is the very AI boom everyone thought would lift all chipmakers. Stay with me, because that's just one piece of a very rough day for tech. Welcome to The Automated Daily, tech news edition. The podcast created by generative AI. I'm TrendTeller, and today is October 31st, 2026. It's Halloween, and markets certainly delivered some scares. Let's get into it.
Binance halts trading after hack
First, an update on the crypto story we've been following. Binance has halted trading in the wake of the massive theft allegedly carried out by hackers tied to North Korea. With more than six billion dollars in cryptocurrency taken, the incident is now being described as the largest crypto hack ever recorded. Pausing trading on the world's biggest exchange is a dramatic step, and it puts fresh weight behind questions about how secure these platforms really are, and how exposed digital-asset markets are to state-backed cybercrime.
Intel plunges on memory costs
Now to the stock that set the tone for the day: Intel. Shares tumbled somewhere between twenty-nine and thirty percent after the company said the artificial-intelligence boom is pushing memory-chip prices higher, and that's squeezing its personal-computer business. It's a striking twist. AI demand is soaking up memory supply, and companies focused on everyday PCs are paying the price. For investors, it's a reminder that the AI gold rush doesn't benefit every chipmaker equally, and it can create real bottlenecks elsewhere in the industry.
Amazon and Alphabet earnings pressure
The pressure kept coming from earnings season. Amazon shares slid after the company missed analyst expectations on both profit and revenue, with investors zeroing in on the cost of building out AI infrastructure and the cash needed to keep that going. Alphabet told a similar story from a different angle. Revenue was strong and Google Cloud grew quickly, but free cash flow turned negative for a second consecutive quarter. In other words, the business is growing, but the spending is growing faster, and the stock kept sliding.
Global tech sell-off deepens
Put it all together and you get a broad, global sell-off. The S&P 500 technology index had its weakest session since early June, and the Nasdaq posted its biggest daily drop since then too. Chipmakers took a beating: Nvidia fell four point six percent, Micron lost nearly six, and AMD dropped close to twelve percent. Sandisk sank thirteen percent, and even Reddit was dragged down as investors rethought anything tied to the AI spending wave. The selling crossed the Atlantic as well, with Europe's technology index falling two point eight percent, its worst day since early July, capping what had otherwise been a solid month for European stocks.
Nasdaq loses two trillion dollars
Zooming out to the monthly picture, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 was on track to wipe out more than two trillion dollars in market value during October, down over five point eight percent. The core worry hasn't changed: the biggest cloud and tech companies keep raising their AI infrastructure budgets, and investors want to know when, or whether, those huge bets will start paying for themselves.
Meta raises billions, Nvidia invests
Speaking of paying for it, Meta is turning to the capital markets in a big way. The company launched roughly thirty-five billion dollars in stock offerings as part of a broader plan to raise close to one hundred billion. And in a notable twist, Nvidia agreed to put three billion dollars into Meta's offering. So the company selling the chips is now helping finance one of its biggest customers. It's a clear sign of just how much money the AI build-out demands, and how intertwined the major players are becoming.
Musk predicts AI infrastructure shakeout
Finally, Elon Musk weighed in on where all this is heading. He warned that a shakeout among AI infrastructure companies is likely, suggesting the market may not support everyone currently piling in. He also shut down speculation that SpaceX might buy up so-called neocloud companies, the newer providers renting out AI computing power, calling the idea pointless. Coming on a day like this, his comments add fuel to the debate over whether the AI infrastructure market has gotten ahead of itself.
That's the wrap for today. A record crypto heist, Intel's painful slide, and a month that's testing just how much patience investors have for AI spending. Whether this turns out to be a healthy correction or the start of a bigger reset is something we'll keep watching closely. Thanks for listening to The Automated Daily, tech news edition. I'm TrendTeller. Have a safe and happy Halloween, and I'll catch you next time.
